SUMMARY:

Carol M. Shaw is a Professor Emeritus from the University of Dayton School Of Engineering where she served 40 years teaching in Engineering Technology and Lean Thinking in the engineering management department, where she also spearheaded efforts to increase the graduate enrollment in engineering management, doubling their enrollment in one year. After retirement, she returned to teaching in the U.D. School of Business, MBA program. Co-teaching and publishing (2016) with Joseph Castellano, Ph.D., CPA, a renowned accounting professor in the department. (2007-2013) The courses focused on systems thinking and the role of W. Edwards Deming and his influence on management thinking as described by Dr. Ed Baker in his book Scoring A Whole in One: Best Management Practices.

She also acted as a change agent in an administrative capacity as Associate Dean of Engineering, where she designed and developed educational programs that addressed diversity issues, initiating one of the first Women in Engineering programs in the country that is still running today The percentage women in U.D. School of Engineering , has increased from less than one per cent to 30 percent, As a change agent, she developed programs for minority students, PREFACE a pre-freshmen and cooperative education program. She also developed re-entry programs for adult women, to transition women with mathematics and science degrees into engineering, obtaining funding for Women in Science from The National Science Foundation. She built on this experience and designed a re-entry program for women and men with mathematics and science degrees to transition them into engineering, funded by the Air Force Logistics Command. Because of her U.D., Women in Engineering Program, she developed a national reputation and assisted the National Science Foundation and Senator Ted Kennedy drafting legislation for Women in Science.

As manufacturing jobs began to disappear, she focused on reinvigorating the US economy by introducing lean manufacturing to the US, working with some of the leading thinkers from Toyota. During this period, she developed the Center for Competitive Change that trained 25,000 US executives in the lean methodology and saved thousands of jobs for US workers.

Continuing her focus on creating jobs and helping to start companies to reinvigorate the US economy she joined the Ohio Tech Angels Fund (OTAF) which was the second largest tech angels fund in the country. She acted not only as an investor, but served on many due diligence teams to help decide which proposals might have the most chance of succeeding as a startup company.

Carol M. Shaw has received numerous awards and recognitions, including Woman of the Year from the Dayton newspapers. She also served on the Board of Trustees of Sinclair Community College, one of the leading community colleges in The United States and helped them develop a manufacturing and industrial strategy as well as on the Board of Directors of Systech, a innovative company using industrial waste as fuel for cement kilns. She has served on many community task forces and boards promoting the growth of Dayton. 

Ms. Shaw and her husband, Dr. Phillip L. Hayden, have formed a small company, True North Thinking, LLC., to promote the formation of Sustainable Organizations to create a Sustainable Planet. Recent projects have included the formation of the Dayton Public Schools Foundation, to aid the school system which is currently “at risk”.

SUMMARY: Dr. Hayden is an Environmental, Health & Safety Engineer with over 40 years of experience, identifying, evaluating and solving EHS problems for a wide range of industries including food, beverage, steel, health care, fabrication, chemical process, and construction, He has organized and prepared compliance plans for OSHA/EPA programs. He served as Program Manager for the Occupation Health/Safety Program for corporate AK Steel, a major steel production company for over 10 years. He managed the industrial hygiene program which continually assessed worker exposure to toxic metals, VOC, hazardous gases (CO, H2S, NH3), hexavalent chromium, PAHs, hydrocarbons), conducted training in chemical safety, PPE, MSDS (SDS), hazard communication, etc.

He has served on government commissions, served as an expert witness, and participated in a wide range of community projects. He founded Hayden Environmental Group and directed a Certified (EPA & AIHA) Laboratory and field service groups including occupation health and safety, air pollution sampling, environmental site investigations, and engineering services. He was a founder of Htec Systems, Inc., an engineering design/build company that provided sustainable environmental, safety, energy and industrial process systems. Over the past 30 years, he has as a Project Manager for over 30 water and wastewater projects in Asia (8 in China), South and Central America, Eastern Europe, Russia and the Middle East. Most of these projects were design-build which included engineering, procurement of equipment, supervision of construction, commissioning and training. 

His business career consists of forming and growing businesses, participating as an investor and performing due diligence on prospective investments and serving on Boards of Directors. He was a member of the Ohio Tech Angels Fund (OTAF) , one of the largest Angel Groups in the U.S., which is located in Columbus, Ohio. He also served on due diligence teams to evaluate whether to invest in the company seeking funds. He was investor and participated in Enviroflight, a start-up company to research, develop and commercialize the product of black soldier fly larvae (40% protein and 30% oils). Enviroflight was the first worldwide venture to successfully produce BSFL on a production scale. He also invested in Scratch Foods, which manufactures nutrient-dense, locally sourced meals for breast cancer survivors. Scratch Foods is presently producing 2,000 meals per week. 

He has been involved in many community activities, including Leadership Dayton, a community leadership organization, State of Ohio Emergency Response Committee, Dayton Groundwater Protection Program, Dayton Council on World Affairs, Engineer’s Club (Wilbur Wright was one of its first president) and Regional Hazardous Chemical Response Board. He served five years as a AF Jet Pilot and a commercial pilot until recently – 3,500 total hours.
